A Braintoss alternative for iPhone
MindBlink is the closest like-for-like Braintoss alternative on iPhone: the same speak-a-thought-and-forget-it job, a different destination. Braintoss sends the thought to your email inbox. MindBlink keeps it on the phone, understands it, and brings it back when it matters.
Most "Braintoss alternative" lists answer a different question than the one you asked. They hand you note-taking apps: Evernote, Notion, Google Keep, a minimalist launcher. None of them does the thing Braintoss exists to do, which is get a spoken thought out of your head and into a destination without you stopping to choose one. So judge on the two properties that actually decide it: how many seconds pass between having the thought and something recording it, and where the thought goes once it is captured. Everything else on those lists is a feature table.
If skipping the email round-trip sounds like you: MindBlink goes from Back Tap to recording in under 800ms, fully on-device. Get MindBlink on the App Store
Decider one: how fast capture starts
Braintoss starts when you open the app. MindBlink ships an App Intent called Capture Thought that appears in the iPhone's Back Tap list, and it begins recording as it launches instead of opening the app and waiting for you to press something. That holds from a cold start, and from a locked screen.
How the 800ms is measured, since nobody else in this category publishes a method: the app starts a timer when MindBlink initializes after the tap, and stops it at the instant the microphone is live and capturing audio. 800ms is a budget the app holds itself to. If that path takes longer, MindBlink writes a slow-launch warning to the system log with the real figure. The window does not include the time iOS spends launching the process before MindBlink's own first line of code runs, because the app cannot observe that. A number without a method is a marketing claim, so here is ours.
Decider two: where the thought ends up
This is the real fork. Braintoss's destination is outside the app: your email inbox, or since version 10 a webhook you configure. That is a genuine design choice, and for someone who lives at inbox-zero it is the right one, because the thought lands where every other decision gets made. MindBlink's destination is a moment in the future. It parses the timing and place out of what you said, so "call the pharmacy before they close" comes back before they close rather than sitting in a folder. Nothing to file, nothing to triage.

Where Braintoss is the better choice
No games here. Braintoss wins on more than one axis and it is worth naming them plainly. It is the cheaper app, $2.99 against MindBlink's $4.99, both paid up front. It captures photos of whiteboards and receipts, which MindBlink does not. It runs on iPad and Apple Watch as well as iPhone, where MindBlink's listing is iPhone only. Version 10 added webhook destinations, so it can drop a thought into whatever system you have wired up. And it has been shipping since January 2013 with 3.8 stars from 47 US ratings, while MindBlink arrived in June 2026 with none. If a track record matters to you, that is a real reason to pick theirs.
For people whose trusted system genuinely is their inbox, the email round-trip is a feature, not a cost. If that is you, stop here and buy Braintoss.
Where MindBlink is different
No inbox to process
Instead of mailing the thought to yourself, MindBlink reads it on-device and schedules it. There's nothing to triage later — the thought comes back when it's relevant.
It understands, then resurfaces
Dates, people, places and urgency are extracted automatically, powering "why now" reminders and a one-thought widget — not just a forwarded message sitting in a folder.
It never leaves your phone
No email hop, no server. Capture and analysis run on-device and sync only through your own private iCloud. More on on-device privacy →
The other apps you'll get pointed to
Search this question and you will be handed a lot of names. Sorted by whether they actually do the job:
Audio Notes | Email Me is the closest free swap if email is the destination you want. It is free on the App Store, rated 4.8 from 664 US ratings when we checked on 26 August 2026, and it sends voice notes, photos and clipboard text to your inbox. We are naming a free competitor on our own comparison page because it is the honest answer to "is there a free Braintoss alternative", and pretending otherwise would cost you more than it costs us.
Just Press Record and Drafts are fast capture apps with a different centre of gravity, recording and text respectively, and we have honest comparisons for both. Apple's Voice Memos and Notes are already on your phone and cost nothing, which is the option every list should mention first and most of them don't.
Evernote, Notion, Google Keep and the note-taking apps are not Braintoss alternatives. They are where a thought goes to be organised, not the thing that catches it in the four seconds before it's gone. Every list that leads with them has quietly changed the question.
