Search this question and you get two kinds of wrong answer. The first is "use Apple Dictation", which is fast only once you are already inside a text field, and getting to a text field is the part that costs you the thought. The second is a ranked list where the evidence is user counts and star ratings, as though popularity were latency. Neither one gives you a number, and neither one starts the clock in the right place. So here is a definition you can hold every app to, including ours.

If you would rather just have the fast one: MindBlink goes from Back Tap to recording in under 800ms, fully on-device. Get MindBlink on the App Store

The metric: steps from a locked screen to live audio

Start the clock when you decide to speak. The phone is locked and in your pocket or your hand, because that is where it actually is when a thought arrives; it is not already unlocked with the app open, which is the situation every marketing demo quietly assumes. Stop the clock when the microphone is capturing. What sits in between is a count of steps, and steps are the thing you can compare across apps without a lab: unlock, find the app, open it, wait for it to load, find the record button, press it.

Transcription speed is a different metric and it is the one most "fastest" articles are secretly ranking. It matters for a two-hour meeting. It does not matter at all for the four seconds in which an idea is still in your head, because by the time transcription is relevant the capture has already succeeded or failed.

The three tiers, by capture path

01

Gesture straight into recording

No target to find, screen can stay off. On iPhone this means Back Tap, which fires on a triple-tap anywhere on the back of the phone. MindBlink ships an App Intent that appears in that list and begins recording as it launches, rather than opening to a screen with a record button on it.

02

Lock Screen control, Action Button, Siri

These skip the unlock but still ask you to look at the phone and hit a specific target, or to say a phrase and wait. Just Press Record supports all of them by its own listing, and so does MindBlink. Apple's Voice Memos can be put in Control Centre and on the Action Button too.

03

Unlock, open, tap record

Six steps or so, and the default path for almost every recorder and transcription service. Otter's listing adds a Siri Shortcut and a home-screen widget, which helps, though a home-screen widget still sits behind the unlock. These apps can be excellent. They are just not competing on this metric, whatever the headline of the article that recommended them says.

How our 800ms is measured, and what it excludes

A number without a method is a marketing claim, so here is ours. MindBlink starts a timer when the app initialises after the tap and stops it at the instant the microphone is live and capturing audio. 800ms is a budget the app holds itself to, checked on the device rather than asserted on a landing page: if that path takes longer, MindBlink writes a slow-launch warning to the system log with the real figure. The window does not include the time iOS spends launching the process before MindBlink's own first line of code runs, because the app has no way to observe that.

We have not put a stopwatch on anyone else's app, so you will not find a competitor's millisecond figure on this page. Estimating one and printing it would be the same trick we are complaining about. What we can compare honestly is the path, which is public: each app's own App Store listing says where it can be started from, and you can count the steps yourself.

The test to run. Lock the phone. Put it in your pocket. Start a stopwatch, take the phone out, and stop the stopwatch when the app shows you it is recording. Do it three times per app, keep the median, and ignore every ranking that did not do this.

Prices, ratings and device support read from each app's US App Store listing on 4 September 2026: Just Press Record (id 1033342465) $6.99, 4.3 from 1,521 ratings; Otter (id 1276437113) free to download with paid tiers, 4.8 from 77,054 ratings; Voice Memos (id 1069512134) free, 4.8 from 1,077,840 ratings; MindBlink (id 6775618538) $4.99, no ratings yet. "Not listed" means the app's own App Store description does not name that start path; it is not a claim that the feature is impossible. Capture paths for Just Press Record are quoted from its listing, which names the Lock Screen, Control Centre, the Action Button, Shortcuts, Siri, the Widget and a URL scheme. Where the other apps are the better answer

Just Press Record is the app to buy if you want one recorder across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, and it has a decade of track record and 1,521 US ratings behind it against our none. Its Lock Screen and Action Button starts are genuinely quick, its transcription is on-device like ours, and it records for as long as you want. The gap between it and MindBlink on the metric this page is about is smaller than anyone selling a listicle will tell you: it is the difference between hitting a target and not needing one. We have a fuller comparison with Just Press Record if that is the decision you are making.

Otter is the better tool the moment your problem is a meeting rather than a thought. Real-time transcription of a Zoom call, speaker separation, searchable summaries, a free tier, and 4.8 stars from 77,054 US ratings. Its listing also names a Siri Shortcut and a home-screen widget for starting a recording, so it is not slow so much as centred somewhere else: the meeting, not the locked phone in your pocket. Its transcription runs on its servers.

Apple's Voice Memos is free, already on your phone, and can sit in Control Centre or on the Action Button, which clears the unlock step for nothing. If you want a recording and no opinions, use it. We wrote an honest comparison with Apple's own apps because it is the option most lists skip. Braintoss is worth a look if you want the thought to land in your email inbox, and Drafts if you mostly type rather than speak.

Why MindBlink is architected around this one number

Every design decision in MindBlink falls out of the metric. Recording begins during launch instead of after it, which is why there is no splash screen to sit through. Transcription and analysis run on-device, so there is no upload waiting on a signal, and no account to be signed out of at the worst moment. And because the thought is understood on the phone, MindBlink can pull the timing and the place out of what you said and bring it back then, rather than adding another list for you to work through later. Fast capture into a pile you never reopen is not a solved problem, it is a deferred one. More on why ideas decay in seconds →

The privacy is a consequence rather than a bolt-on: nothing leaves the phone except through your own private iCloud, so no step in the capture path is waiting on a server. How on-device capture works →

Set it up once and the next idea is already handled: turn the back of your iPhone into a capture button in about a minute. Get MindBlink on the App Store

Common questions

What is the fastest voice note app for iPhone?
By the only definition that can be measured, time from a locked screen to audio actually being captured, MindBlink is the fastest, because it starts recording as it launches rather than opening to a screen with a record button on it. A triple-tap on the back of the phone gets to live audio in under 800ms, a budget the app checks itself on every launch. Just Press Record is the closest rival on this metric: its own App Store listing offers start-recording controls on the Lock Screen, in Control Centre, on the Action Button, and through Siri and Shortcuts. Otter's listing names a Siri Shortcut and a home-screen widget, but a home-screen widget still needs an unlock first, and no path that starts with unlocking wins this metric however fast the transcription behind it is.
Is Apple Dictation the fastest way to capture a thought?
No, and it is the answer most articles give. Dictation is fast once you are already in a text field, but getting to a text field from a locked phone is the slow part: unlock, open an app, put the cursor somewhere, then tap the microphone. Dictation optimises the wrong half of the path. Measure from the moment you decide to speak, not from the moment the keyboard is already on screen.
What is "tap back" on iPhone, and can it record a voice note?
The feature is called Back Tap. It lives in Settings under Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap, and it runs an action when you double-tap or triple-tap the back of the phone. It can launch a Shortcut, which means it can be pointed at almost any app. MindBlink registers an App Intent called Capture Thought that appears in that list directly, and it begins recording as it launches, so the tap is the whole interaction. Note that Back Tap is a different feature from Tapbacks in Messages, which are the reaction emoji you hold a message to add.
Does Back Tap work when the iPhone is locked?
Yes. Back Tap fires with the screen off and the phone locked, which is the whole point: you never have to look at the phone or find a target on it. MindBlink is designed around that path, so recording starts from a locked screen and the thought is transcribed on-device once it ends. Setup takes about a minute and is written up in our Back Tap guide.
How is the under-800ms figure measured?
A timer starts when MindBlink initialises after the tap and stops at the instant the microphone is live and capturing audio. 800ms is a budget the app holds itself to: if that path runs long, MindBlink writes a slow-launch warning to the system log with the real figure. The window does not include the time iOS spends launching the process before MindBlink's own first line of code runs, because the app cannot observe that. We have not put a stopwatch on other apps, so no competitor timing is quoted anywhere on this page.
Is Just Press Record faster than MindBlink?
It is the closest, and on some paths it is a genuine tie. Its listing offers Lock Screen, Control Centre, Action Button, Siri and Shortcuts starts, all of which skip unlocking. The difference is aiming: those controls need you to find a specific target, while a triple-tap on the back needs no target and works with the screen off. Just Press Record is also the better buy if you want one app across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, at $6.99 one-time against MindBlink's $4.99, both read from the App Store on 4 September 2026.
Is there a free fast voice note app for iPhone?
Yes. Voice Memos is already on your phone, it is free, and it can be reached from Control Centre and the Action Button, so it clears the unlock step too. It records, and that is the whole job: it does not read what you said or bring it back to you later. Otter is free to download with paid tiers and is excellent at transcribing meetings, but its transcription runs in the cloud and the quickest starts its listing names are a Siri Shortcut and a home-screen widget. If budget is the constraint, start with Voice Memos on the Action Button.
Does the fastest app also keep the recording private?
It does here, and the two are related. MindBlink transcribes, analyses and schedules every capture on-device, with no account and no server, syncing only through your own private iCloud. There is no upload step in the path, which is one reason the path is short. The test for any app that claims this: turn on Airplane Mode and record. If the transcript still appears, it is on-device.
